This Page is Designed to Last

A Manifesto for Preserving Content on the Web really resonates with me. I try to keep this website simple - it should be easy to maintain and easy to add new content. The design is guided by minimalist aesthetic and aimed at a low carbon footprint. All of which leads naturally to adherence to the guiding principles of the Manifesto:

  1. Return to vanilla HTML/CSS
    • This website is pure HTML and CSS and works great with JavaScript disabled.
  2. Don't minimize that HTML
    • This website does not minimize HTML. Though it does minimize some CSS files.
  3. Prefer one page over several
    • This website has many pages. But I use a link checker from time to time to make sure that no broken links exists.
  4. End all forms of hotlinking
    • All files are served from the same server. Except some images on my posts on the links blog. These images are not mine, and I do hotlink them to credit the sources.
  5. Stick with native fonts
    • This website uses Modern Font Stacks - System font stack CSS organized by typeface classification for every modern OS. The fastest fonts available. No downloading, no layout shifts, no flashes — just instant renders.
  6. Obsessively compress your images
    • This website uses image processing provided by the static site generator zola to resize all images of my blog posts to have a width of 1200 pixels. I would like to reduce image sizes further by exploring SVG minimization and dithered images
  7. Eliminate the broken URL risk

I strive to make this website and its content long-living. At the same time, this website is subject to constant change. It is my playground. It is my digital home, subject to small and big redesigns. The viewing and making of websites should be fun. This in itself is a motivator to keep sites alive.

I added this site to above-mentioned monitors. Lets see how long it will last.
